HOW MUCH DO WE LOVE JESUS?

"Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution" (2 Tim 3:12).

At first glance, this may seem to be a silly question. Yet it is one that we all need to ask ourselves. How much do we really love the Lord? Is our love based on a feeling, or does it run deeper than our emotions? Is our love superficial, does it depend on where we are and who we are with? Consider that this is the very question that Jesus asked of Peter following his resurrection and after Peter had denied the LORD three times, just as Jesus had told him he would.

"So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jona, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jona, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jona, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep" (John 21:15-17).

Why would we think that this same question is not of paramount importance to each one of us in this hour? How much we love the LORD is going to be the determining factor in how we survive in the days ahead. You see, it is our capacity and willingness to love that makes all the difference. God Is Love. Christ proved His love for us, by willingly paying the price for our redemption back to the FATHER. Every provision has already been made for us to walk in victory; to be overcomers. It is up to us whether we will... or not.

If we depend upon our strength, our abilities, our talents, our intellect, our FLESH, we will utterly fail and fall short, never obtaining the promises of God. Multitudes today call themselves 'Christians'... yet deny the very Lord that redeemed them. Many start out walking with God, only to slip and fall along the way, giving heed to other voices, and their own lusts of the flesh. One of the predominant earmarks of many of today's leaders is that they are walking in pride, arrogance, and a haughty spirit. Any voice raised against them is immediately condemned with 'touch not God's anointed.' Like dumb sheep, people are following after ravening wolves, who feed themselves while subjecting the sheep to their never ending demands... all the while the poor sheep are starving to death.

Jesus is the Only True Shepherd.

"But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:26-27).

"And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep" (John 10:5-11).

"If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15).

"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him" (John 14:21).

God's love is a finished work. While 'Our love'... still has to be tested and tried.

When John the Baptist came on the scene, "He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah," (John 1:23).

John's ministry was to prepare the way for the coming of Christ. Of all the people's and nations of the world, God chose the Jews to be His Chosen People. He sent them prophets and leaders down through the centuries. He raised up Moses to lead them out of exile in Egypt, performing great and mighty signs and wonders on their behalf. It was to the Jews that He gave the Law through Moses, by which they were to live and worship HIM. Yet the Jews were a stiffnecked people. By the time God raised John to prepare the way of the LORD, they were a proud people, living under Roman occupation. They had established a very structured, impressive religious hierarchy by which they ruled and controlled the people. They were well aware of the prophesied coming of a Messiah to deliver them. They also had very set, preconceived ideas of what this Messiah would be like, and what they expected Him to do when He arrived.

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts,"(Isaiah 55:8-9).

GOD never does anything the way that men expect!

The believers in the Early Church held no illusions regarding what it took to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Christ's message was clear and straightforward. It required absolute commitment. Today, we are faced with the same opportunity as well as the same challenges and requirements. The religious leaders no doubt spoke often of the soon coming Messiah, yet when HE came, they utterly rejected Him... because He did not match up to their expectations. They wanted a rescuer... someone who would back them up... give them even more pre-eminence over the people... deliver them from the Roman occupation and establish a Kingdom in which they could rule as Kings and Priests. They wanted more power than they already possessed.

Small wonder that they hated Him from the beginning, for He exposed them for what they really were. "But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" (Mat 3:7).

"O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh." (Mat 12:34).

"But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in." (Mat 23:13).

This was not the kind of Messiah they were looking for. They were so secure in their own self-righteousness, that they were totally blind to their true condition. They knew how to work the system. They had all the right connections, knew all the right people, worked the religious and the political systems of their world to their greatest advantage.

Then this Man had the audacity to claim He was the "Son of God,' and worse still, He found fault with them. He called them "white washed sepulchers full of dead men's bones." And they hated Him for it. They equally hated... all who followed after this 'Jesus.' So I ask you, 'Where was their love of God?' and 'How are the religious leaders today any different than the Scribes and Pharisees that crucified the LORD?'

Are you beginning to notice something here?... That it is not God's love for man that is in question... but man's love for God, wherein the problem lies?

"The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun," (Ecc 1:9).

Religious leaders today are just as self-absorbed, using the ways and means of the world to build and control their religious empires, just as the Pharisees of old. We have different titles, ideologies and tools employed, but the basic principles are the same... power and control of the people. Nothing really ever changes when it comes to the nature of man.

"See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is," (Eph 5:15-17).

Look further here at Paul's admonition:

"Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord." (Eph 5:6-10).

Believers today are literally under attack! The concordance renders 'vain words' as meaning 'empty reasoning.' Logical conclusions are the result of carnal thinking. There is no place for carnal reasoning in a spirit-led life... for the ways of God are beyond the comprehension of the carnal mind. "So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God." (Rom 8:8). These things, 'empty reasoning'... bring the wrath of God upon all of those who walk in 'unbelief'... which is what the 'children of disobedience' means. God forbid, that we should be partakers with them in their error! We once were in spiritual darkness, but now that we have received the light of the Lord, we must walk in the light, shunning the false and proving all things. We must come to the knowledge of Christ... we must come into absolute agreement with HIM in all things.

Know that everything you believe in is going to be tried by the coming fire. This fire is the righteous indignation of a Holy God, against all unrighteousness.

Believers' today are unprepared for the things that are coming upon the world. The Early Church believers would be unable to even recognize the messages being preached from pulpits across the land. The basic, fundamental teachings of Christ have come under attack in the past 50+ years, rendering them vain (useless). The Gospel of Christ has been diluted, dissected, and dismembered, until a majority of believers have no idea what the Teachings of Christ Jesus even are. Yet in His Grace and Mercy, God has given warnings to His Body in the earth today, to prepare our hearts to receive Him. It makes an enormous difference in our lives, what we believe and what are expectations are. If they are not in alignment with the Word of God, then we are in error and will be greatly disappointed. If we are not in agreement with what is acceptable to the Lord, then we are not going to be prepared to stand up to the wrath of His indignation.

Faith is not... solely for the preservation of our flesh, but for the transformation of our spirit... that we may be transformed into the image (be a reflection) of Christ.

"Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world" (1 John 4:17). Our faith should always be directed toward believing GOD, and His faithfulness. It is not, as the present day 'faith movement' would have us to believe, a way of coercing God into giving us everything we want in this world. When you read the 11th Chapter of Hebrews, commonly referred to as the faith chapter, you will not find one example of anyone obtaining material wealth by exercising their faith.

"By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians attempting to do were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthah; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect." (Heb 11:29-40)

The stage is already set today for the persecution of the saints in this end-time. And it is going to be the religious establishment who will spearhead this persecution of all who refuse to compromise and come under their control.

We are going to learn what David meant when he said in Psa 56:11 "In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me." Now is the hour in which we need to "redeem the time for the days are evil." "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." (Eph 5:11).

Multitudes today are making great claims as they promote doctrines of devils, attempting to bring about prophetic fulfillments in their own strength. In many circles the Holy Scriptures are deemed no longer relevant, and have been demoted beneath the latest prophetic word flowing forth from the mouths of the plethora of false prophets. Is it any wonder that the Church is Apostate in this hour... she has compromised herself into spiritual darkness, "calling light darkness and darkness light"... fulfilling the very scriptures she has so lightly discarded as being no longer relevant.

How very suitable for this hour are Christ's words to the seven Churches:

The Church of Sardis...

"And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches." (Rev 3:1-6).

The Laodicean Spirit is widespread in this hour...

"I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent." (Rev 3:15-19).

In our spiritual darkness we have come to accept bigger as being better; quantity over quality; might makes right - regardless of the cost. Christian TV has sunk to unimaginable lows, making a mockery out of everything that is Holy... the bigger and more obscene the spectacle, the higher the ratings, and the more the masses flock after the abominations.

No wonder Jesus said, "I will spew you out of my mouth." To be vomited out, one must first have been taken in. One's name cannot be erased out of the Book... unless it has first been written in.

This is somewhat different than when Jesus said "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity" (Mat 7:23). Also in (Luke 13:27) "But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity." There is a difference between those who at one time knew the Lord, and those who never knew Him. Jesus makes it clearer in John 8:55 when the religious leaders were attacking him... "Yet you do not know Him or recognize Him and are not acquainted with Him, but I know Him. If I should say that I do not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I know Him and keep His word [obey His teachings, am faithful to His message]."

Many lay claim to being among the called and chosen, the heirs of salvation... but the Word clearly tells us that it is "by their fruits you will know them." We are all called to be 'fruit inspectors.' Not only should we pay close attention to what others are teaching and doing, but it is even more needful that we examine our own hearts... and work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. First and foremost, it is our own fruit that we should be concerned about. We must be faithful to His message, obeying all His teachings, keeping all of His commandments.

Jesus is our example; He is the only One that we are called to follow, He forewarned us what the signs of the end would be...

"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved" (Mat 24:7-13).

These things are already being fulfilled in the world, and are only going to intensify. What is the one thing that defines a true follower of Jesus Christ? .... "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" (John 13:35).

Jesus very plainly told us, "... Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself" (Mat 22:37-40), along with... "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15).

We must give God the pre-eminence in all things. This means that we love, honor and obey God more than anyone or anything else in our lives. We should not be surprised when God tests our fidelity. Lip service is only skin deep. The Pharisees gave God lip service... but their hearts were far from Him.

The great falling away has already happened. False prophets with lying signs and wonders are commonplace today. Natural disasters are wreaking destruction worldwide on an unprecedented scale. The love of many has grown cold, people love to have their ears tickled and hear only smooth things. Mainstream denominations have replaced Sound doctrine with more relevant approaches to spirituality.... pitiful substitutes called Emergent, Purpose-Driven, Third Wave, New Apostolic Reformation, the list goes on and on. When we denounce the Holy Scriptures as being irrelevant, then we make every promise contained therein null and void as well ... we cannot negate the commandments and still hope to reap the promises, unless of course we are walking in full-blown deception.

We are seeing an unprecedented rise in protestant, charismatic circles, of turning away from sound teaching, and following after fables and the vain imaginations of men. There has been a turning away from judging spiritual moves and manifestations according to the Word.

"If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness" 1Tim 6:3.

"Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God" (Rom 10:1-3).

Instead there is an acceptance of signs and wonders, as an end in themselves, only turning to the scripture when these manifestations are criticized or brought into question. All manner of scripture is taken out of context and twisted to support the manifestation of the hour. "If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings. Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain" (1Tim 6:3-6).

"But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be" (Mat 24:37).

"Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he" (Gen 6:22).

Now that is a mouthful. We are in the days as of Noah. And in this hour, God is drawing all whose hearts are toward God, unto Himself. We too, must do all that He commands us to do. This is where our love for God will be manifest.

We must willingly lay down our imaginations, bringing our every thought into subjection to Christ. We must know the hope of our calling. We must work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. We must count the cost. Is our aim to please God, or to please men? Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. No man cometh unto the Father except by HIM.

This testing is not something new, reserved for the end of the ages. Abraham was tested... he had to prove that he was willing to sacrifice his only son Isaac, if God commanded it. Peter was tested... in the Garden he drew his sword and cut off the soldier's ear in defense of the Lord. Yet a few hours later he denied knowing Jesus three times. We all will be tested... that we might prove to ourselves what is the good and acceptable will of God. "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God" (Rom 12:2).

Because of the hour in which we are now living and the gross apostasy that has literally swept over the world, we should know that we will all be tested. It is one thing to make a profession of fidelity to God when there are no obstacles to overcome in our life. It is another thing to stand firm when your world is falling down around you. The majority of those who call themselves Christian today are sadly on the broad road that leads to destruction. "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat" (Mat 7:13).

Will you still stand true when to do so will cost you your livelihood? Your family? Your friends? Your reputation? Your social standing? Even your very life?

Will you still believe and obey God's Word to you when everyone you care about in this world turn against you for it?

Somehow asking the question 'How much do you love Jesus?' doesn't sound nearly so silly anymore. In fact, it is of paramount importance in this hour, when all that can be shaken is being shaken.

"For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us" (2 Cor 1:20).

"If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth" (Mark 9:23).

Amen & Amen
