I have to wonder what is harder in our life to overcome - than prejudice? When I looked up bias, it immediately gave me prejudice - preconceived judgment or opinion;
1. opinion formed beforehand - a preformed opinion, usually an unfavorable one, based on insufficient knowledge, irrational feelings, or inaccurate stereotypes.
2. holding of ill-informed opinions - the holding of preformed opinions based on insufficient knowledge, irrational feelings, or inaccurate stereotypes.
3. irrational dislike of somebody - an unfounded hatred, fear, or mistrust of a person or group, especially one of a particular religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual preference, or social status.
4. make somebody prejudge somebody or something - to make somebody form an opinion about somebody or something in advance, especially an irrational one, based on insufficient knowledge.
Opinion means - view, estimation, belief, judgment, attitude, or outlook. Along with preference - an unfair preference for or dislike of something; and influence somebody - to influence somebody or something unfairly.
This covers all forms of prejudice; gender, race, social position, economic standing, education, you name it. The KEY thing involved here is our ATTITUDE. Granted, we are taught many of our prejudices from infancy on. Culturally prejudices can be so widely accepted... that they are not even questioned. So how does the genuine follower of Jesus Christ rationalize being biased or holding prejudices? Don't be too quick in answering that question...
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them" Genesis 1:27.
"Now the Lord God said, It is not good (sufficient, satisfactory) that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper meet (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him" Genesis 2:18.
"He created them male and female and blessed them and named them [both] Adam [Man] at the time they were created" Genesis 5:2.
God created mankind in His image. God is not hung-up on gender, mankind is. We are male or female in this physical lifetime... but far more than that, we are spiritual beings, created in the likeness of God, that we might have fellowship with God. If we could but begin to get a handle on the purpose of our creation, we could overcome the weaknesses of this flesh that binds us. Contrary to the opinions of some believers, God created the woman as a help-mate and compliment to the man - not as an inferior sub-species.
"The first man [was] from out of earth, made of dust (earthly-minded); the second Man [is] the Lord from out of heaven. [Gen. 2:7.] Now those who are made of the dust are like him who was first made of the dust (earthly-minded); and as is [the Man] from heaven, so also [are those] who are of heaven (heavenly-minded). And just as we have borne the image [of the man] of dust, so shall we and so let us also bear the image [of the Man] of heaven" 1 Corinthians 15:47-49.
We make the choice... to be earthly-minded or to be heavenly-minded. To cling to our carnal understanding... or to grow up in Christ and be led by His Spirit in All Things!
Guess that puts the ball in our court... doesn't it? The world today is literally full of prejudices in every venue of life. From our homes, to our schools, to our workplace, to our churches, to our governments... There is no place in our life that the ugly head of bias and prejudice is not manifested in one form or another. And far too often we have blinders on and justify... rather than condemn it. We better wake-up and realize that we are bearing one image or the other!
The earthly or the heavenly!
"But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him" John 4:23.
"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" Philippians 2:5.
"And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all" Mark 9:35.
We are spirit beings. This fleshly body is good for nothing but to return to the dust. It is our spirit that is going to live eternally. We cannot approach the Father in our carnality. We can only approach the Throne in the Blood of the Lamb, Who alone is our righteousness. Yet today we have multitudes upon multitudes that are full of hateful, prejudicial ideas and beliefs, while at the same time fully convinced that they are righteous before a Holy God. Our day was accurately described in the Book of Jude...
"Woe to them! For they have run riotously in the way of Cain, and have abandoned themselves for the sake of gain [it offers them, following] the error of Balaam, and have perished in rebellion [like that] of Korah! These are hidden reefs (elements of danger) in your love feasts, where they boldly feast sumptuously [carousing together in your midst], without scruples providing for themselves [alone]. They are clouds without water, swept along by the winds; trees, without fruit at the late autumn gathering time--twice (doubly) dead, [lifeless and] plucked up by the roots; Wild waves of the sea, flinging up the foam of their own shame and disgrace; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of eternal darkness has been reserved forever. It was of these people, moreover, that Enoch in the seventh [generation] from Adam prophesied when he said, Behold, the Lord comes with His myriads of holy ones (ten thousands of His saints). To execute judgment upon all and to convict all the impious (unholy ones) of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed [in such an] ungodly [way], and of all the severe (abusive, jarring) things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. These are inveterate murmurers (grumblers) who complain [of their lot in life], going after their own desires [controlled by their passions]; their talk is boastful and arrogant, [and they claim to] admire men's persons and pay people flattering compliments to gain advantage.
But you must remember, beloved, the predictions which were made by the apostles (the special messengers) of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). They told you beforehand, In the last days (in the end time) there will be scoffers [who seek to gratify their own unholy desires], following after their own ungodly passions. It is these who are [agitators] setting up distinctions and causing divisions--merely sensual [creatures, carnal, worldly-minded people], devoid of the [Holy] Spirit and destitute of any higher spiritual life.
But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith [make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit; Guard and keep yourselves in the love of God; expect and patiently wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah)--[which will bring you] unto life eternal. And refute [so as to] convict some who dispute with you, and on some have mercy who waver and doubt. [Strive to] save others, snatching [them] out of [the] fire; on others take pity [but] with fear, loathing even the garment spotted by the flesh and polluted by their sensuality.
Now to Him Who is able to keep you without stumbling or slipping or falling, and to present [you] unblemished (blameless and faultless) before the presence of His glory in triumphant joy and exultation [with unspeakable, ecstatic delight]-- To the one only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory (splendor), majesty, might and dominion, and power and authority, before all time and now and forever (unto all the ages of eternity). Amen (so be it)" Jude 1:11-25.
How can we possibly 'BELIEVE' that we can walk in prideful arrogance, full of self-righteousness, passing judgment on others, lording it over others, and in any infinitesimal way be following Christ? How can we even think that our carnal understanding can begin to comprehend the things of God, let alone that we can pass-off our judgments on anyone else? Have we forgotten that the Word also tells us in Matthew 7:2 that "For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again"? Obviously we have, since our actions speak louder than our words.
"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" 2 Corinthians 10:5. We must be willing to reign-in our thoughts! We must be obedient to God first and foremost.
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God" Romans 12:2. Are we to believe that the cultures and traditions of men are the perfect will of God? That male domination is God ordained? This is the opinion widely held by the majority of the world's population... however there is no majority rule in the Kingdom of Heaven. "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus" Galatians 3:28.
For we are ALL ONE in CHRIST JESUS. This is the key difference between the world's way of thinking and the Kingdom of God's way of thinking. We are far too prone to leaning upon our own understanding, than we are prone to seeking the mind of Christ.
Do we understand that as long as we are operating from our fleshly impulses, we are children? "Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all" Galatians 4:1.
