For an individual to be reprobate... means that they have been rejected by God. They are rejected by God, because they first rejected Him. There are four verses in the Bible where we find the word reprobate. May we seek the Lord for understanding, that we may recognize and know what is of God and what is not... that we not be led astray in our thinking, and step off the path set before us.
Those things that God spoke to the people of old, are appropriate and applicable for us today... and we would show wisdom to heed His warnings. Mankind has not changed... neither has God changed. His requirements of man are the same today as they have always been.
Jeremiah 6:30 Men will call them reprobate and rejected silver [only dross, without good metal], because the Lord has rejected them.
The concordance defines reprobate here as being...
#3988 - A primitive root; to spurn; also (intransitively) to disappear: - abhor, cast away (off), contemn, despise, disdain, (become) loathe (-some), melt away, refuse, reject, reprobate, X utterly, vile person.
Why did God say these men shall be called reprobate? Because He had rejected and cast them off. Earlier in the chapter... He states specifically why they are rejected.
vs. 10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.
vs. 13 For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
vs. 14 They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
vs. 15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
vs. 16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
This is a knowing, willful refusal to believe, obey and honor God. They did not want to hear, they want to have their own way. They claim all is well; peace, peace, when there is no peace. They have been given the opportunity to know God; to walk in His ways; to experience His rest; and instead have chosen to go their own way. Their dwelling place is in lies. Because of their refusal of God... there is no more remedy for them.
For all of the following verses, reprobate is #96 - From G1 (as a negative particle) and G1384; unapproved, that is, rejected; by implication worthless (literally or morally): - castaway, rejected, reprobate.
Romans 1:28-32 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
This is a result of thinking that our way is better than God's way. These are not individuals who never had an opportunity. These are people who made a conscious, deliberate choice... an exercising of their free-will; against God. We see in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
We need to be obedient to God... over and above our reasoning mind... and the ever changing moral standards of our day. When we try to change an individual or group that are already reprobate, we are wasting our time. God is the final judge. God alone sees the hearts and knows the thoughts of man. We have no business second guessing God.
2 Timothy 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
Titus 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
Note that anyone God gives over to a reprobate mind, have first rejected the truth. They did not like to retain God in their knowledge. These are people who resist the truth, who do not know what faith is. They make a profession of knowing God... but in works (their words and actions), they deny Him. This is not something new, nor is it something that happens in a moment of weakness. It takes commitment and dedication; one must have tasted of the Lord... that He is good... and chosen to reject God in favor of ones own desires. One would have to act defiantly and establish ones self in rebellion against God... for God to reject you and give you over to the lusts of your own heart; and ultimately your own destruction.
The battleground lies in our thoughts; in our obedience to God's commands; in laying down our self-life in order that we might be led by the Holy Spirit. The enemy is ever vigilant in his attack on the children of God.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
So just how does the enemy attack us?... Primarily in our thoughts... that is where the battleground lies. Any area of our life that we have not surrendered to Christ's lordship is an open avenue of attack. That is why it is so imperative that we willingly lay down all of our own wants and desires. We must make Jesus our absolute Lord and Master. Christ came to give us so much more than salvation and eternal life. He came to abide within us, and transform us into His own image and likeness. He desires to make us overcomers... while we are still living in this darkened, fallen world. Many today are settling for the crumbs on the floor, when there has been a place set for them at the table. Jesus said in Luke 11:9-10 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
We can know the Living God. But we must seek Him if we truly want to find Him. We must be willing to let go of all of our preconceived ideas... so that we can see and hear what the Spirit will reveal to us. We see in James 4:2-6 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
Most of us spend our time seeking after things, rather than seeking to know God. Many today are lusting after power, they want physical manifestations on a supernatural scale, more than they want to stand awestruck in God's presence. Many want the good things in this life... health, wealth and prosperity... yet fail to seek after the things that have lasting value. Why did James call them "Ye adulterers and adulteresses"....? He certainly was not suggesting that they were all having extramarital affairs. He used that reference, because they were committing spiritual adultery... Desiring the things of the world, more than and instead of knowing and pleasing God. This is spiritual adultery. We cannot serve two masters. Our allegiance will be manifested by our words and actions. We cannot love the world and the things of the world, and love God.
1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. Knowing about God and Jesus... is not the same thing as being in Him, and having Him in you. Many talk about the things of God... but have no firsthand knowledge; no personal experience with God. We can rest assured that God is not going to give us anything to consume it upon our own lusts. When we willingly submit to the operations of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we can then begin to grow up in Christ, we can be overcomers. 1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. We can only be overcomers, as Christ is abiding in us... when we are walking in submitted obedience.
So how does one place him or her self in a position of becoming reprobate? Paul exhorted the church at Corinth in 2 Corinthians 13:5-10 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates. Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates. For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection. Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.
